A fire which badly damaged a derelict mansion in Gwynedd is being treated as arson.

Police are investigating the blaze which swept through the Grade II-listed Plas Ty Coch off the A487 Bangor Road, Caernarfon, just after 06:30 BST on Wednesday.

Firefighters are still at the scene, dampening down hotspots.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said investigators believed the fire had been started deliberately.

About 80% of the ground floor room where the fire broke out has been badly damaged, with 60% of the first floor also damaged.

Other parts of the building have also been affected by heat and smoke.

The road was closed on Wednesday morning between Caernarfon and Y Felinheli as two fire crews tackled the blaze.
