Call for landslip-closed A545 on Anglesey to be replaced

The closure of a road on Anglesey which was damaged by flooding has prompted calls for a new one to be built.
The A545 which runs along the Menai Strait has been closed since Thursday following a landslip at Glyn Garth.
Beaumaris town councillor Alwyn Rowlands has called for a new road, calling it the only "long-term" solution.
Anglesey council said it hoped to receive funding from the Welsh Government to repair the road.
During the storm last week, Beaumaris Castle moat burst its banks and flooded parts of the street while the main road into Beaumaris was also blocked last night by a landslide near Menai Bridge.
Mr Rowlands said there were concerns about the general condition of the A545 before the flooding.
It is the second time the road has been closed in the past few years, he said, adding it was an inconvenience to businesses, residents and tourists.
"It is something that needs urgent attention... to cure the long-term problem," he said.
"What's happened in the last week or so has really pinpointed the need for a brand new road.
"There's quite a lot of money going in from Beaumaris into the tourism industry so we have no problem saying to the Welsh Government, 'spend a bit more money on this corner of the island'."
A Welsh Government spokesman said it was a matter for Anglesey council but added it was willing to meet the local authority to discuss the way forward.
In response, a spokesman for Anglesey council said: "Firstly, we hope that the Welsh Government will agree to emergency financial support to repair the A545 between Menai Bridge and Beaumaris.
"Our highways officers will then, in co-operation with Welsh Government, investigate different options to improve the resilience of this important route for the long term."
