A man has been jailed for six months for a "really nasty" attack on an off-duty police inspector.

Nathan Joseph Killilea, 30, appeared at Caernarfon Magistrates' Court and admitted assault and criminal damage.

The detective inspector needed treatment for "serious facial injuries" including a deep cut around her eye and faces surgery for a broken nose.

Rebecca Hughes had been on her way to the airport for a Spanish holiday when she was attacked.

It happened in the early hours of Monday when officers including Det Insp Hughes stopped Killilea.

There had been reports that a man had been seen trying doors in the Sea Road area of Abergele, Conwy county.

Det Insp Hughes had been waiting outside her home for a lift to the airport.

Instead she was taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital for treatment.

Det Ch Insp Neil Harrison called it a "really nasty attack" on an officer "acting in the best interest of the public whilst off duty".

He said: "This individual had the opportunity to make off but instead chose to attack the officer causing serious facial injuries."

Magistrates also ordered Killilea to pay his victim £500 compensation and police £150 for damaging a cell.
