Conwy council's Plaid Cymru leader defends Tories in cabinet

The Plaid Cymru leader of Conwy council has presented a cabinet including Conservatives in defiance of what he called a "diktat" from his party.

Gareth Jones told a meeting of the full council on Monday that party politics "should not distract us".

However, two other Plaid members named as members of the cabinet have quit after the party's ruling national executive committee said it did not approve of the deal.

Plaid Cymru said it was a proudly grassroots party "governed by the will of its membership".

Mr Jones defended his coalition, saying he was "not here to play politics at any level".
