In Pictures: Zulu exhibition at Cardiff Castle
An exhibition dedicated to the film Zulu has opened at Firing Line: Cardiff Castle Museum of the Welsh Soldier. The film released in 1964 starred Michael Caine, Stanley Baker, Glynn Edwards and Ivor Emanuel, renowned for his rendition of Men of Harlech.
The exhibition contains some rare items not previously seen before in public including unpublished photographs taken by the director on the set in Natal, along with Chief Cetewayo's shield and assegai (spear) used in the production.
Exhibition organiser Henry Coleman explains: "Contributions to the exhibition have come from cast, crew and private collectors, all of whom have been extremely generous in providing not only original material but also many rare and unique items. The storyboards were rediscovered in Natal in 2009 - prior to this we didn't think they even existed."
The regiment portrayed in the film - the 24th Regiment of Foot - became the South Wales Borderers and through later amalgamations part of the Royal Regiment of Wales then the Royal Welsh. The Firing Line museum at Cardiff Castle represents this regiment and 1st The Queens' Dragoon Guards. Examples of Victoria Crosses awarded during the conflict can be seen in the collection.
Christopher Dale, Director of Firing Line, says: "The exhibition debunks some of the myths the film portrays about the battle. Whilst the film is a stylised portrayal of the defence of Rorke's Drift it does capture the essence of the bravery of the troops so overwhelmingly outnumbered." The exhibition runs until 26 June 2011.
