Vulcan pub in Cardiff under threat again

A Victorian Cardiff pub is under threat again three years after it won a reprieve to stay open.

Brewers SA Brain agreed to continue with the lease on The Vulcan Hotel in Adamsdown in 2009 as long as it was commercially viable.

The lease comes to an end in May and bosses say it will not be renewed.

The pub has become popular with students as well as locals who collected a 5,000-name petition to keep it open the last time it faced closure.

AFacebook groupis trying to raise support for the pub, which first opened its doors in 1853.

James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers, Hollywood star Rhys Ifans and sports presenter John Inverdale were among the famous names who backed the first campaign.

SA Brain sales and marketing director Richard Davies said the Vulcan was "no longer commercially viable" for either the tenants or for SA Brain.

The brewer leases the pub from owner, Cardiff businessman Derek Rapport.
