Lib Dems and Plaid pick Cardiff South and Penarth hopefuls

Dr Bablin Molik (Lib Dem) and Luke Nicholas (Plaid) will stand in the by-election

The Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru have chosen their candidates for the Cardiff South and Penarth by-election.

The Lib Dems were the first of the four main parties to select a candidate, followed by Plaid.

Labour has a shortlist of five potential candidates and the Conservatives' selection process is underway.

Labour MP Alun Michael is standing down in a bid to become south Wales' first elected police commissioner.

Dr Bablin Molik - a researcher at Cardiff University who lives in the Splott area of the city with her husband and two children - said she was "honoured" to be chosen to stand for the Lib Dems.

Plaid Cymru candidate Luke Nicholas is a researcher for the party's assembly group who lives in Grangetown, Cardiff.

Labour won the seat with a majority of more than 4,700 over the Conservatives at the 2010 general election.

A date for the by-election has not been set.
