Ospreys and Wales centre Andrew Bishop on assault charge

Wales and Ospreys rugby player Andrew Bishop has been charged with common assault and will appear in court next month.

Police were called to an incident in Mill Lane, Cardiff city centre in the early hours of Monday morning.

Mr Bishop, 27, who has won 16 caps for Wales, will appear at Cardiff magistrates' court on 27 September.

His club said it would be inappropriate to comment ahead of court proceedings.

South Wales Police have not named the man charged but issued a statement.

"A 27 year old man was arrested in connection with an assault in the early hours of 20 August in Mill Lane, Cardiff.

"He has been charged with common assault and released on conditional bail. He will appear in court on 27 September."

Centre Bishop joined the Ospreys in 2005 proving to be a major figure in the 2006-2007 season - making 30 appearances in a year.

He has also played club rugby for Bridgend and Neath RFC, where he gained the club's young player of the year award.

The Llantrisant-born player first played for Wales against South Africa in 2008.

His last cap was against the Barbarians in June but he did not feature in the subsequent tour of Australia.
