Gardener Peter Davies dies after impaled on spikes

A gardener has died after being impaled on spiked railings while pruning a tree.

Peter Davies, 67, of Merthyr Tydfil, fell 20ft (6m) onto the silver decorative spikes while chopping branches off a tree in his garden.

A neighbour found him badly injured and fought to save him before paramedics arrived.

The widower was flown by air ambulance to hospital but died after suffering severe blood loss.

Grandfather Mr Davies was discovered by neighbour Ken Clement, 80.

'Be careful'

"I saw him using a ladder to get up the tree and called over asking him to be careful," he said.

"About 20 minutes later I found him badly injured and I called the emergency services."

Another neighbour added: "It was just dreadful. Mr Clement did everything he could for him until the ambulance crew arrived.

"They worked so hard to try and save him but he lost so much blood, he could not have survived."

A South Wales Police spokesman confirmed a man had died suddenly while gardening and it was being treated as a "tragic accident".
