Newport leisure trust board seeks volunteers

The Wales National Velodrome will be run by the new trust

Volunteers are being sought for a board of trustees to run a new leisure services trust in Newport.

Council-run sports facilities in the city will be transferred to a non-profit organisation from April 2015.

It will manage the Wales National Velodrome, pool and tennis centre, Newport Stadium, Newport Centre, Active Living Centre and Caerleon golf course.

Newport council said the move will save around £440,000 a year.

The authority is looking to recruit 11 trustees, who will set aims for the organisation, monitor its performance and support its management team.

The idea for the trust was first put forward by Newport council in September 2013 to try and ease financial pressures.

The council's sports development service and its booking and memberships teams will also be transferred.

It is not known how the council's existing 500 leisure workers will be affected by the move.

Other Welsh councils, including neighbouring Torfaen, have already set up trusts to run their leisure services.
