A school was evacuated after a pupil took a suspected World War Two hand grenade to show his class.

Bomb disposal experts were sent to Croesyceiliog School in Cwmbran and some of its 400 pupils were taken out of lessons for three hours.

Gwent Police discovered the grenade was a piece of "war memorabilia" and did not contain explosives.

A force spokeswoman said: "There was no danger posed and no harm caused to anyone."

'False alarm'

A bomb disposal squad from Bristol examined the device found in a teenage boy's bag.

But officers discovered it was "hollow" and could not be used as a weapon.

One parent tweeted: "My daughter just told me a pupil at Croesyceiliog school took a WW2 replica hand grenade to school and now they've all been evacuated!"

Police said they received a report at 10:15 BST that a pupil had a hand grenade in his bag and the school was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Torfaen Council confirmed the incident was a "false alarm" and said some students taken out of the east side of the school and others made to stay in their classrooms until the panic was over.
