Barry Island Pleasure Park: Developer ready to flatten site

Barry Island was given a tourism boost when it became the setting of the BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey

Developers are ready to demolish Barry Island Pleasure Park and replace it with a multimillion-pound development.

Hilco's plans for restaurants, a cinema, bowling alley and 124 flats on the site were approved in 2012.

And now it has has submitted an application to Vale of Glamorgan council to flatten the park.

The council's director of development services, Rob Thomas, said the way the site has been left to fall into disrepair is "extremely frustrating".

The fair was originally used by holidaymakers who went to the nearby Butlins holiday camp, which closed in 1996.

At the island's peak in 1934, it attracted 400,000 people during the August bank holiday weekend.
