Former bingo hall in Cardiff at risk of collapse after fire

A disused building where firefighters are tackling a large blaze in the Adamsdown area of Cardiff is at risk of collapse, the fire service has said.

Police and fire crews have evacuated neighbouring properties in Pearl Street and nearby roads have been shut.

Around 40 firefighters are at the three-storey building which was previously a bingo hall and nightclub.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said no casualties had been reported.

A rest centre has been set up for evacuated residents at the nearby Star Centre and road closures affecting Agate Street, Splott Road and Pearl Street will remain in place until Tuesday.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service group manager Jason Evans said the blaze had been brought under control and was now contained within the building.

"The roof has collapsed and there is a risk of the building collapsing. The fire fighting operation will continue tonight to minimise any risk to the public," he said.

South Wales Police Supt Andy Valentine said the cause of the fire was still under investigation and officers would remain at the scene throughout Monday night.

At the height of the fire 15 fire appliances, including a hydraulic platform, were called to tackle the blaze.

Firefighters battered down a side door to gain entry to the building following the callout at about 12:30 GMT on Monday.
