Cardiff Airport passengers top 1.2 million

Cardiff Airport saw 1.2 million passengers come through its doors in 12 months as February's figure increased by 68% on the previous year.

The Welsh government-owned airport had 75,055 passengers last month.

It benefitted from more than 36,000 French and Irish rugby fans flying in to watch games at the Rugby World Cup in October.

Managing director Debra Barber said 2015 was "a real turning point" for the airport.

This airport has not seen 1.2 million passengers in any 12-month period since 2011.

The routes which have seen the largest passenger growth include Dublin, Edinburgh, Paris and Faro.

Ms Barber said: "Looking ahead to the coming year we are confident we will build on this success."

The Welsh government bought the airport for £52m in March 2013 amid concerns about investment by its then Spanish owners.

During the 12 months to that month, 997,000 passengers used it.
