Coed Eva primary school replacement plans move forward

Multi-million pound plans to replace a Torfaen school devastated in an arson attack have moved a step forward.

Coed Eva Primary School's infants and nursery buildings in Cwmbran was destroyed when a fire broke out early on New Year's Eve.

Pupils have been taught in temporary buildings since then but the council wants to build a £3.7m replacement.

Seven people have been arrested and released on bail in connection with the fire.

A report to Torfaen council's cabinet committee said the school's insurance company would pay out £2.95m to replace the lost building.

Councillors want the replacement to be linked to the existing juniors' school and agreed to fund the difference in cost to allow that, up to £750,000.

Designs for the new building will now be drawn up.

Cabinet members also agreed a £30m replacement for Croesyceiliog Comprehensive School and a new £20m sixth-form centre to replace the county's existing English-language sixth forms.

The plans are part of the Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools programme to improve school buildings and facilities.
