£284m Cardiff secondary school upgrade plans approved

Cantonian High School is among those to be replaced

Plans to rebuild and expand five secondary schools in Cardiff have been approved.

The £284m proposals will see Cantonian, Fitzalan and Willows high schools replaced.

Cardiff High will be expanded to allow for an extra 300 pupils, while Cathays High School will also be rebuilt.

The work is the second phase of the city's 21st Century Schools programme which aims to help meet increasing demand for places.

Primary schools - Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Caerau, Fairwater and Ysgol Pen y Pil in Trowbridge - will double in size under the plans while St Mary the Virgin, Butetown, will be rebuilt in the work which begins in 2019.

Four new special schools will be built as part of a "reshaping" of special needs education in the city.
