Fire crews fight grass blaze near Porthmadog

More than 40 firefighters are tackling a grass blaze near Porthmadog in Gwynedd.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said 600 sq m of gorse and bracken was on fire at Morfa Bychan and it was close to several properties.

The alarm was raised at 1055 BST and eight fire engines are at the scene.

Meanwhile, a grass fire on a mountain behind Morriston Hospital in Swansea was started deliberately on Sunday, says Mid and West Wales Fire Service.

An incident command unit from Rhyl has been sent to the incident at Morfa Bychan, along with fire engines from Porthmadog, Pwllheli, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Harlech.

Four crews were sent to the Gelliwastad Mountain in Morriston on Sunday shortly after 2000 BST.

'Very deep-seated'

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the "very deep-seated" blaze, behind the hospital, was "malicious".

A crew from Morriston was sent back to the area twice early on Monday when the fire flared up again.

It took the fire service until the early hours to extinguish the blaze after the initial call-out at 2012 BST on Sunday.

Firefighters left the scene at 0040 BST, but a crew from Morriston was sent to Ynys Forgan, between Morriston and Clydach, at 0132 BST.

They left at 0312 BST, only to be called out again at 0727, leaving at 0830 BST.

Meanwhile, crews from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been tackling a fire in 1,000 sq m of woodland and gorse near Abergele in Conwy.

Three fire engines and an off-road vehicle were sent to Coed y Gopa Woods shortly after 1920 BST on Sunday. It is unclear at the moment how the fire started.

In south Wales, a helicopter carrying water is dousing a fire on Maerdy Mountain in Aberdare.

About 12 acres (five hectares) of woodland is alight and is deemed too dangerous for firefighters, said the fire service. The alarm was raised at 1300 BST.

Crews are also fighting a blaze on 20 acres (eight hectares) of trees and woodland at Darrenlas, Mountain Ash. Two fire engines have been at the scene since 1300 BST.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is tackling a grass fire in Llanpumsaint, near Carmarthen. The alarm was raised at 1138 BST and five fire engines have been called to the incident.

In Llangorse, near Brecon, crews in two fire engines and two off-road vehicles have been fighting a blaze on a hill since 1229 BST.

Meanwhile, in Llanybydder on the Carmarthenshire/Ceredigion border up to 20 acres (eight hectares) are alight. The fire service said strong winds were hampering fire crews.
