A 14-year-old boy has died after falling into a river near Carmarthen.

Kieran Nicholas Bennett-Leefe, from Carmarthen, was swept away about a mile downstream from the village of Capel Dewi on Monday evening.

After an extensive search his body was pulled from a deep pool about an hour later, and flown by air ambulance to Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

He died early on Tuesday. BBC Wales understands he was a pupil at Queen Elizabeth High School, Carmarthen.

The search involved police and ambulance helicopters, two fire brigade boats and coastguards.

Insp Eric Evans said: "Following an extensive search the boy was seen submerged in a deep pool.

"Fire officers, who were already in the water, managed to pull him out to the waiting paramedics and the ambulance helicopter.

"The boy was flown immediately to Morriston Hospital.

"Despite the attempts of staff at the hospital, he died in the early hours of this morning."

The coroner has been informed.
