Llanelli bus station opens as part of £60m town revamp

The new bus station is part of the first phase of the Eastern Gateway development in Llanelli

A new bus station which forms part of a £60m redevelopment of Llanelli town centre has opened.

It is part of the Eastern Gateway scheme that will also see a hotel, cinema, pubs and restaurants, offices, shops, and a new civic square.

Open-top bus rides toured the developments on Tuesday allowing people to see the progress of work.

Developer Henry Davidson Ltd is expected to complete the gateway development by the end of 2012.

Other projects include the regeneration of Llanelly House - a Grade II-listed Georgian town house - a new theatre complex and a revamp at the town's central library.

The bus station, built by Britannia Construction, opens a month ahead of schedule.

Carmarthenshire council's executive board member for transport, Philip Hughes, said: "The bus station will play such an important part in delivering people directly into a new busy centre for Llanelli.

"Britannia will, with the closure of the old bus station in a week's time, make headway into the second important phase of this magnificent development that bodes so well for Llanelli's economic future."
