Ironman Wales in Tenby: Thousands line route

Thousands of people turned out to line the route of the Ironman Wales triathlon in Tenby, Pembrokeshire.

It was the second year the event was held in Wales and more than 10,000 spectators were expected to cheer on competitors.

Competitors had to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and then run 26.2 miles.

Some roads were closed and the council updated social networking sites Facebook and Twitter to keep the public informed.

More than 1,500 athletes from 43 countries took part in the gruelling race, which started at 07:00 BST on North Beach, Tenby.

Competitors must complete the course within 17 hours and the winner, Sylvain Rota, from France, finished in eight hours and 52 minutes.

A park and ride system was in operation from Carew Airfield for spectators to witness the event in Tenby and Saundersfoot.

Pembrokeshire council placed crossing points along the route to ease traffic jams, but said the busy A40 and A477 would not be affected.

Meanwhile, more than 600 triathletes were expected to compete in the Anglesey Sandman triathlon at Llanddwyn on Sunday.

The road from Newborough Square to the race venue in Newbrough Forest was closed from 09:00 BST until 14:30 BST.
