Calsonic Kansei, Llanelli: Politicians fear 48 jobs at risk

Up to 48 jobs are at risk at a car parts plant in Carmarthenshire, according to local politicians.

Around 450 people work at the Calsonic Kansei site at Llanelli.

Assembly member Keith Davies said it would be a blow for the community while MP Nia Griffith said it came at a time when job opportunities were few and far between.

The company has not confirmed any job cuts and has been asked to comment.

Calsonic Kansei manufactures automotive parts, including climate control systems, power train cooling products and exhaust systems and components.

"The news that 48 jobs will be made redundant from Calsonic Kansei is a blow for the community and the confidence in manufacturing in west Wales," said Mr Davies.

"I am sure that this is a decision which has not been taken lightly.

"I believe the company has sought to protect the future viability of the plant to protect the other 450 jobs on site."

Mr Davies added he had written to the Minister for the Economy, Business and Transport, Edwina Hart to request her department's involvement to try and avoid any further job losses.

Ms Griffith described it as a "devastating blow for each and every one of the workers affected, particularly at a time when job opportunities are few and far between".

She added she would also be asking Welsh Secretary David Jones to use "whatever influence he has" to support the workers.
