Milford Haven marina's £6m lock gates work to start

A £6m scheme to install new lock gates at a Pembrokeshire marina and docks which will improve access for pleasure sailors and fishermen, is due to start next week.

The investment at Milford Haven is aimed at boosting tourism and business at the port.

The port authority has also announced that £1.5m will be spent on ship building operations in Pembroke Dock.

Work on the lock gates is expected to be completed in December.

The lock gates investment is being partly funded by the European Union to encourage tourism along the Welsh coastline.

The port authority said it would release more details next week about its plans to develop ship building at Pembroke Dock, adding that it hoped to attract business there from the renewable energy industry.

Port authority chairman David Benson said: "These major investments announced today represent the beginning of a new period of investment to develop the Port of Milford Haven into a stronger and more diversified business, with a particular emphasis at Pembroke Port on the role it will play as a core port location to meet the needs of fabricators, suppliers, and operators within the increasingly diverse world of energy.

"The port is well funded and is in a strong place to continue its commercial development as the strategy continues to unfold."
