Welsh Water: Sewage centre 'disgusting' smell tackled

Action is being taken to try to get rid of smells coming from a Welsh Water sewage treatment plant in Swansea.

People living near the plant off Fabian Way described the smell, which has been lingering for about two months, as "disgusting".

Welsh Water said it is using new chemicals to reduce the odour and is looking at a long-term solution.

Swansea council said it was monitoring the situation.

Councillor Harry Bebell, who lives nearby but on the Neath Port Talbot side of the border with Swansea, said: "For nearly two months, there's been a disgusting smell floating across Fabian Way.

'Odour issues'

"Nobody should have to put up with this for so long.

"When you go past in the car you can smell it - what visitors think when they are visiting Swansea I don't know."

Mr Bebell said the prevalent wind would blow the smell to Port Tennant and Bonymaen.

A Welsh Water spokesperson said: "We have taken a number of measures to tackle odour issues in the Crymlyn Burrows area.

"The use of new chemicals has significantly reduced the odours.

"We are investigating potential long-term solutions and continue to work with Swansea council, elected representatives and residents to address the community's concerns."
