Plans to revamp Neath town centre have been submitted to the county council.

The authority has received £13m funding for a new retail development and 604-space multi-storey car park.

If approved work would start early next year and would see the town's magistrates' court, the existing multi-storey car park, Wilkinson and Tesco Express stores demolished.

Nineteen units would be in the retail side of the development and there would also be office space and 31 homes.

'Cosy town centre'

Neath MP Peter Hain welcomed the plans to breathe new life into the town centre which has suffered from the tough economic climate.

"Neath has a got a fantastic and cosy town centre which people love visiting and shopping in," he told BBC Wales.

"The heart of the town is very unusual in that respect. But with brand names leaving, there are a number of empty units.

"The closure of the magistrates' court, we're also losing our post office and the citizens advice bureau has gone - it's one thing after another."

"The town will be massively enhanced by these new facilities."
