Malcolm Fyfield faces four gross negligence manslaughter charges

A mine manager has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter over the deaths of four miners at a Swansea Valley colliery.

Malcolm Fyfield, 58, was manager of the Gleision drift mine near Cilybebyll when it flooded in September 2011.

MNS Mining, the company which operated the site, has pleaded not guilty to corporate manslaughter charges at the hearing at Swansea Crown Court.

David Powell, 50, Charles Breslin, 62, Philip Hill, 44, and Garry Jenkins, 39, died in the incident.

Members of their families were in court for the hearing.

Two of the company's directors were also present in the courtroom.

The judge granted Mr Fyfield unconditional bail and fixed the start date for the trial for 24 March.

Proceedings are expected to last six months.
