Special prayers have been said for six-day-old baby Eliza-Mae Mullane, who died at Pontyberem where the family's pet dog was later seized by police.

Eliza-Mae died last Tuesday and the family's Alaskan Malamute dog was taken away from their home in New Road.

Police have said forensic investigations into the baby girl's death could take some time.

Prayers for her were said at the Holy Cross church in Pontyberem on Sunday.

'Dearly loved daughter'

Parish priest Father Pius Augustine said Eliza-Mae's parents Sharon John and Patrick Mullane had been trying to contact him in recent days.

"We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy and it has been a big shock for us and we hope her family will get through this, " he said.

"On the one hand, we are a believing community and we find consolation and strength in prayer, and on the other hand we wanted to express our concern and support of the family."

News of the baby's death first emerged last Tuesday morning when police were called to the family home at 08:30 GMT.

Dyfed-Powys Police seized the family dog, called Nisha, which is not a banned breed.

They have said the cause of baby Eliza-Mae's death is not yet known. No details of her injuries have been revealed.

Her parents have paid tribute to their "dearly loved daughter" in a statement issued through police.

They said they would cherish the short time they had with her and that losing her had cast the "most horrible shadow" over all the family.

They have also thanked the local community for their support.
