Dylan Thomas Prize shortlist revealed by Swansea University

Musician and writer Cerys Matthews is one of the judges of the £30,000 award

Seven writers are in the running for the 2014 Dylan Thomas Prize for authors aged 39 or under.

Welsh poet and author Owen Sheers and Glasgow-based Jamaican poet Kei Miller have made it to the shortlist.

Two entries - The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton and A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing by Eimear McBride - won the 2013 Man Booker Prize and 2014 Baileys Women's Prize respectively.

The seventh winner of the £30,000 Dylan Thomas Prize will be named in November.

The award, run by Swansea University, will be announced at a gala dinner in the city.

The shortlist is:

• Joshua Ferris, To Rise Again at a Decent Hour (Viking)

• Eimear McBride, A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing (Faber & Faber)

• Kseniya Melnik, Snow in May (Fourth Estate)

• Kei Miller, The Cartographer Tries to Map a Way to Zion (Carcanet Press)

• Owen Sheers, Mametz (National Theatre Wales)

• Naomi Wood, Mrs Hemingway (Picador)

The 2014 prize is being awarded during a year of celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Dylan Thomas, who died in New York in 1953 at the age of 39.
