Swimmers race down to the waters on Porthcawl's Sandy Bay

Thousands of daredevil swimmers have braved the icy waters of Porthcawl for the annual Christmas Day swim.

Some 1,500 people, many in fancy dress, took to the sea in an effort to raise money for various charities.

Swimmers gathered at the town's Sandy Bay from 10:30 GMT, with the run down to the waves at 11:45 GMT.

Organisers said the atmosphere was "incredible" as the annual event marked its 50th year.

Ian Stroud, from Porthcawl Christmas Swim, said: "Everyone was in good humour and good spirits.

"The fancy dress really added to the day, and for our anniversary it was absolutely fantastic."

He added the public had been very generous in raising and donating money.

"We couldn't get over the generosity. Every penny of it will go to charity," he said.
