Emergency services stop search for boy, 11, in River Towy

The search for a missing 11-year-old boy has stopped for the evening and will resume at 09:00 GMT on Thursday.

Milford Haven Coastguard and Dyfed-Powys Police were concentrating on a stretch of river where he went missing.

It was feared the schoolboy, who is from Carmarthen, fell into the River Towy on Tuesday at about 16:00.

A team of 50 were involved in the search including police, fire service, coastguard and lifeboat teams.

Underwater cameras are also being used.

The boy was playing with his brother on a concrete platform when he fell.

Arwel Hughes, Urban Search and Rescue team leader said they were focused on the area where the boy is believe to have fallen in.

Earlier, Insp Eric Evans told a news conference they could not be "100% sure" the boy was in the Towy as there was always an "element of doubt" when dealing with children.

Firefighters, the coastguard, a lifeboat crew and an RAF Sea King rescue helicopter joined the search.

Insp Evans said the 75-mile long river has a very strong current.

The search, centred near Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, stopped overnight but began again at about 09:30 GMT on Wednesday.

Police officers said specially trained officers are supporting the boy's family.

The spot is known locally as "the steels" because of steel plates forming new banks after the river was moved to make way for a new dual carriageway.

Landowner Chris Thomas said it was popular with local children, especially in the summer months, and he went to send away two youngsters on Tuesday because he was worried about the risk but they ran away.

Mr Thomas said children liked jumping into the river and they called it "22" because they believe it is 22ft deep.
