Classical composer Karl Jenkins has received a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Jenkins, from Gower, said: "I am delighted by this great honour and the recognition of my music."

Foster carers Steve and Wendy Taylor, from Swansea, who have looked after more than 1,000 youngsters over 31 years, were both appointed MBE.

Mrs Taylor said: "It's not an easy job but it's tremendously rewarding."

The man who led a campaign for a memorial for Welsh soldiers who died in World War One in Flanders has been awarded a British Empire Medal.

Peter Carter Jones, of Swansea, campaigned for the cromlech to be built in Belgium, to mark the 100th anniversary of the war.

David Madge, director of legal services at South Wales Police, and Huw Jenkins, chairman of Swansea City Football Club, have both been appointed OBE.

Another celebrated knighthood has been for the Welsh rugby legend Gareth Edwards, from Bridgend.
