Investigation into cause of Gower College fire, Swansea

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a large fire which destroyed part of the main building at a college in Swansea.

About 100 firefighters tackled the blaze at Gower College on Tycoch Road, Sketty, which broke out just before 04:30 BST on Friday.

It is understood to have started in the library on the third floor and spread to the fourth.

Lower floors have also been damaged by water used to put out the flames.

Residents reported being woken by the sound of breaking glass and about 20 appliances went to the scene but the fire is now out.

Tycoch Road, which leads to the campus, has been closed on Friday and the college's neighbouring Hill House site is also shut.

The college has confirmed the Tycoch campus will remain closed to the 2,000 students returning from the half-term break on Monday and Tuesday.

However, those due to sit GCSE exams on those days will still take them at Hill House.

Iwan Cray, area manager for Mid and West Wales Fire Service, said the damage was "significant".

He also told BBC Radio Wales' Good Morning Wales programme that issues accessing water made it more difficult for crews.

"The water supply hasn't been sufficient for us to be able to put all of our operational approach into place," he said.

"We had to work around that and bring water in from strategic hydrants which were further away."
