Downing Street Christmas tree grown in Gower

A Christmas tree grown in Gower has been selected to stand proud outside Downing Street.

The 6m (20ft) tree grown by Robert Morgan, from Three Crosses, won the competition from 200 produced by fellow growers to secure the coveted spot at Number 10.

"It's great to be recognised," he said.

In 2014, he won a place in the same competition to provide a Nordmann fir for the prime minister's pillared state dining room.

Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns was on hand to welcome the tree - and Mr Morgan to Downing Street

The farmer diversified and started planting trees in 1996 after becoming the fifth generation of the family to take over the sheep and cattle business.

But it did not start well and his first young trees were eaten by rabbits.

Since then his business has grown to 500,000 trees and he now has a herd of 30 reindeers.

"It's great to have some animals on the farm - just not the normal Welsh stock," he said.

"During the years I spend some lonely times in the trees trying to get things right, shaping them.

"Not many people can see what is going on throughout the year on a Christmas tree farm so to get that accolade of best Christmas tree grower is a proud moment."
