Archive: Richard Burton speaks of his home village

Hollywood actor Richard Burton once said no matter where he travelled, he would always belong to his home village of Pontrhydyfen.

Burton, who would have turned 100 on Monday, starred in Cleopatra and was known for his powerful performances in Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood and Shakespearean stage roles.

On Monday, blue plaques were unveiled at both Burton's birthplace and the former home of his mentor and legal guardian, Philip Burton, marking the centenary celebrations of the actor's life and legacy.

"I disguised myself heavily to go to the village because if you think I'm recognisable in England, the United States or India, or somewhere nationally, I'm infinitely more recognisable in here because they all know the family face apart from mine," he told the BBC on a return to the village in 1977.
