Canadian FM: Assad must go

G7 foreign ministers will attempt to agree a common position on the Syrian conflict today, before the US secretary of state flies to Russia to try to persuade it to abandon its Syrian ally.

Chrystia Freeland, the Canadian foreign minister, told the Today programme to find a peaceful solution for Syria, Assad must go. She thinks it's clear that Russia as Assad's military backer bears "absolute moral and political responsibility" for what President Assad is doing.
