BBC News website readers have been sending their photos of how they are paying their respects to Nelson Mandela. Nasima Joulay paid her respects outside Mr Mandela's house in Houghton, Johannesburg. "People are coming from near and far, from all walks of life with flowers, candles, good wishes and prayers."

In other towns and cities in the UK tributes were paid to Nelson Mandela. In Plymouth, the South African flag was flown at half mast from City Hall, beside the Union Flag and the Flag of St George.
