South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been convicted of culpable homicide, after Judge Thokozile Masipa found that he killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, by mistake.

Reeva Steenkamp's mother, June, comforted a relative during the verdict. Ms Steenkamp's family have yet to comment on the judgement.

Media swarmed around Oscar Pistorius as he left the court. He has been allowed to remain on bail ahead of sentencing which is to take place on 13 October.

The verdict leaves the disgraced sprinter facing up to 15 years in jail, although the judge could suspend the sentence or only impose a fine.

Judge Masipa said: "It is clear his conduct is negligent." However, she said the state had failed to prove he intended to kill Reeva Steenkamp.

Arnold Pistorius, the athlete's uncle (left), said the family had never doubted Pistorius' version of events. "In a tragic event like this, there are no victors... It won't bring Reeva back but our hearts still go out to her family and friends," he said.

Defence lawyer Barry Roux smiled as he left the court on Friday.

State prosecutor Gerrie Nel listens in court. The prosecutors say they are "disappointed" Pistorius was not convicted of murder but will wait until after sentencing to decide whether to appeal.
