Somalia's first female pilot: 'People thought it was a man flying the plane'

Asli Hassan Abade made history in 1976 by becoming the first female military pilot in Somalia and in Africa.

She told the BBC how the then president of the country allowed her to pursue her dream after she threatened to get the qualification abroad.

The 64-year-old, now based in the US, also said she wanted her story to inspire girls from across the continent.
