Gunmen have attacked a bus at a university in the western Pakistani city of Quetta, killing several students.

The bus was carrying female students as they were going home. Sunni militant group Laskar-e-Jhangvi claimed the attack.

About 20 wounded students were taken to a local hospital, which was itself attacked by gunmen as the victims were being treated.

Quetta is the capital of Balochistan province, which has seen a surge in violence. Hours before the Quetta violence, a historic house in the mountain resort of Ziarat was destroyed by militants.

Security forces in Balochistan have been battling both separatist insurgents and Sunni Islamist extremists.
