China has stepped up security in Kunming following a deadly knife attack on the southern city's railway station.

The attack took place late on Saturday night and left 29 people dead and more than 130 others wounded.

There were scenes of shock and anguish as terrified people were sent fleeing from the station.

Witnesses say they saw attackers dressed in black and armed with knives, who began slashing and stabbing people at random.

China sent medical specialists to the railway station on Saturday night and more than 60 victims were rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. China's security chief, Meng Jianzhu (C) also went to the scene.

China has blamed the savage attack on separatists from the north-western Xinjiang region. Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed "all-out efforts" to investigate the attack.

Authorities also blamed a fatal attack last year which saw a car driven into a crowd of people on the edge of Beijing's Tiananmen Square, killing five people, on Xinjiang separatists.

A candlelit vigil was held on Sunday night outside Kunming's railway station to commemorate victims of the attack.
