Asia Beats: Ruhaniyat, India

Ruhaniyat are a folk band with edge from the Indian city of Calcutta.

Tajdar Junaid, who plays a charango from Bolivia on this recording, is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer and producer.

Apart from performing with Ruhaniyat, he is a solo artist and has many film scores to his name.

He says it was boredom with commercial music that lead him to discover the dynamic Baul musicians, mystic minstrels from Bengal.

Lead vocalist Satyaki Banerjee is passionate about Bengali folk music and committed to reinvigorating it and bringing it to new audiences.

Here, he plays the Middle-Eastern oud, but his first instrument is the sarod from India.

Third member of the group, Rabi Mondal, is a folk musician steeped in the Baul tradition.

Satyaki Banerjee spoke to BBC News's Asia Beats series about what makes Ruhaniyat tick.
