Heavily armed militants launched an assault on Pakistan's busiest airport in the southern city of Karachi, killing at least 18 people.

Witnesses spoke of loud gunfire and at least two huge explosions at Jinnah International Airport's old terminal, as army commandos were brought in to dislodge the attackers.

The military said it had fully secured the airport just before dawn, after killing all 10 attackers.

All operations at the terminal - mostly used for cargo and VIP flights - were suspended but officials said they should resume in the afternoon.

Smoke still billowed from the terminal on Monday morning, but officials said no aircraft were damaged during the attack.

The Pakistani Taliban have said they were behind an attack. Pakistan has been fighting an Islamist insurgency for more than a decade, with the Taliban the main militant group.
