People across Indonesia are casting their ballots to elect their next president, in a very tight race.

Around 190 million registered voters will choose between Jakarta governor Joko Widodo and ex-army general Prabowo Subianto.

The first polls opened at 07:00 local time on Friday (22:00 GMT on Thursday) in east Indonesia. Jakarta and the island of Java began voting two hours later at 07:00 in their time zone (0000 GMT).

Former army general Prabowo Subianto is seen as a convincing campaigner and a decisive leader, but there are questions over his human rights record.

Ahead of the vote, election officials delivered ballot boxes to polling stations across the nation.

Donkeys and horses were also used to distribute ballot boxes to voters in Indonesia's remote areas.

More than 22,000 policemen have been deployed to keep the peace, authorities said.
