A TransAsia Airways plane crashed in Penghu, Taiwan, late on Wednesday as a storm battered the area.

The plane, carrying 58 people, came down in a village near the airport after an apparently failed second attempt to land.

Forty-eight of those on board are now known to have died, including the crew. Reports say one person may be missing on the ground.

Aviation officials were due at the site on Thursday to begin an investigation into the crash.

Ten people on board the plane survived and were taken to hospital. The crash is Taiwan's worst air disaster in 12 years.
