In Indonesia, prayers were held at a mass grave for many tsunami victims in Banda Aceh - the city which was virtually wiped out by the tidal waves.

On the eve of the anniversary, Aceh's Grand Mosque - one of only several buildings to have survived the tsunami - hosted a memorial service.

In Thailand, people placed flowers on a memorial wall in the fishing village of Phang Nga, which was devastated by the massive waves.

Nearly 5,500 people were killed in Thailand, and many of the victims were tourists from a number of European countries.

In Sri Lanka, the Ocean Queen Express - or the "tsunami train" - has become a symbol of the tragedy. The train, which was hit by the waves 10 years ago with heavy loss of life, will make a special journey on Friday.
