At 09:00 (01:00 GMT) across Manila, radio stations, companies, churches and schools sounded the earthquake alarm, signalling the start of the drill

The city saw scenarios such as collapsed buildings, fires, stampedes and looting to test how rescue teams would respond.

Containers were placed across Metro Manila containing medicine, tents, rescue equipment and other material needed for rescue and emergency response.

The drill involved all government units in Metro Manila as well as hospitals, businesses, schools, mall operators and religious sectors.

The ShakeDrill was organised by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), which aims to prepare residents for a future quake.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology says a powerful earthquake could hit the country anytime within the next 50 years.

Last year's first-ever ShakeDrill was deemed a success, with 6.5 million people participating, though authorities hoped to beat that number this year.

Drills were held simultaneously in the nearby provinces of Cavite, Rizal, Laguna and Bulacan.
