In pictures: Stories from China's floods

Villagers in Xu Jia Dun village in Hubei province are among the almost 16 million people across China who have been affected by flooding along the Yangtze, China's longest river.

Pictured asleep with a half-eaten packet of lunch in his hands, this picture was shared widely and is said to be Chinese rescue worker Li Jinlong. The story being shared is that he did not sleep for three days and four nights while taking part in the rescue effort.

A school in Tongren city was left completed destroyed, with its buildings and playgrounds swallowed by floodwaters.

As rescue efforts stepped up, volunteers worked round the clock over the weekend, when this picture was taken, to provide relief for the millions affected.

Three statues at China's Wuhu Riverside Park dubbed the "family of three", were first seen photographed partly subsided in water, but was soon photographed fully submerged by netizens who used the family as a way of tracking the severity of the floods.

After days of heavy rain in Anhui province, a soldier who spent a reported 19 consecutive hours trudging around in mud and rain looking for flood victims photographed his feet left numb and wrinkled at the end of the day.

On Tuesday Chinese Premier Li Keqiang travelled to China's eastern Anhui province to inspect flood protection work.
