More than 60 people have died in floods and landslides caused by heavy rain in northern India. The hill state of Uttarakhand has been the worst affected, with over 40 deaths reported.

The monsoon season in India generally lasts from June to September, bringing rain which is critical to India's farming output. But the rain in Uttarakhand and neighbouring states has been heavier than usual.

More than 160 buildings have been damaged in the floods in Uttarakhand. A three-storey building was washed away in the town of Uttarkashi - reports say at least three people have died and more are missing.

Rescue operations are in full swing, but the continuing rain is making things difficult.

Thousands of pilgrims who were on their way to Hindu shrines in the region have been stranded after bridges and roads collapsed due to landslides.

Many roads in the regions have caved in after the torrential rain.

Residents living near swollen rivers have been moved to relief camps in some areas.

Officials say heavy rain is continuing in the Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts, and the Ganges river is flowing above the danger mark.
