In pictures: India building collapses

Two buildings have collapsed within hours of each other in different parts of India. First an old building toppled in the capital Delhi leaving at least 10 people dead including five children.

Hours later a building in a construction site in the southern city of Chennai came down amid heavy monsoon rain, leaving scores of workers trapped in the rubble.

A 50-year old structure collapsed in a poor area of Delhi late on Saturday.

Rescue workers removed debris from the site by hand.

Neighbours looked on as rescue efforts continued. Many homes in that part of the capital were built illegally and with poor-quality material.

Hours later in Chennai, rescuers battled to free dozens of construction workers trapped when part of the site they were working on collapsed.

They are having to search through several layers of rubble, and officials said it could take them two days to reach the ground floor.

Most of those trapped under the rubble are thought to be workers from the neighbouring province of Andhra Pradesh

The collapse occurred after the area was hit by heavy monsoon rains.

Pictures taken on Sunday showed just how much clearing there is still to do.
