In pictures: Turkey mine disaster

Relatives and friends are still anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones after a coal-mine collapse in Soma in western Turkey killed hundreds of workers and left hundreds more missing.

Turkey's energy minister said there was little hope of finding anyone else alive in the pit.

But families kept vigils outside the mine and at the local hospital where the injured have been taken.

Rescue efforts continued throughout the day.

There were a few moments of relief and joy for some families.

But many others face heartbreak and grief.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (C), surrounded by bodyguards, visited the scene of the tragedy. An angry crowd later hurled abuse and kicked his car during the visit. Some arrests were made amid the scuffles and pictures showed the prime minister seeking refuge in a shop.

Protesters in Soma attacked the office of the prime minister's Justice and Development Party. They blame the government for neglecting health and safety standards at the mine.

In Ankara, anti-government demonstrators also took to the streets and fought with riot police.

Officials said the blast was caused by an electrical fault, which triggered a power cut and made the mine cages unusable.
