Tensions were extremely high in Turkey on Saturday - a day after an attempted coup. Overnight explosions and gunfire echoed in the biggest cities, Istanbul and Ankara, and a fire burned in the military police HQ in Ankara.

Turkish police loyal to the government took over tanks that had been taken into city streets, and took some away to the police headquarters.

Soldiers blocking a bridge across the Bosphorus surrendered, and the bridge re-opened.

Supporters of the president attacked journalists near the country's military HQ, in Ankara.

Turkey's parliament and presidential buildings in Ankara were attacked overnight, with lawmakers reportedly taking refuge in shelters in the building.

The building was damaged after it was attacked at least three times.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim called an extraordinary parliamentary session.

Mr Yildirim said the situation was now "completely under control."

The special parliamentary session opened with a minute's silence in honour of those who lost their lives.

More than 1,000 people also sustained injuries during the dramatic and chaotic night.
